The charm of Um - Phang

By... น้อง พร

I have not been update my blog for 2 months! Gosh... I never expect myself to be so busy that I couldn't come around here. Ok, Um-Phang (อุ้มผาง) will be topic for this month. I went to Umphang, Tak province, last month. The main purpose was to make a charity trip for those children who are minority in the mountain border of Thailand. As our destination is very far away, we also tried to do the sightseeing at the same time. So, we had our first night at Taksin national park. We reached there at about 1am and we had to get up early coz Um-Phang is still very long way to go.

The way from Mae-Sod (แม่สอด) to Umphang is very curvature. The distance is not that far but we finally reached Um-Phang at about 4pm. Then, we headed to local school 'Umphang Wittayakhom'. Actually, this is the second year that we visited this school for this purpose. We wanted to do it on every children day as long as we can arrange our schedule to come here. Children day in Thailand is on every second saturday of January. But we came here in February this year as we couldn't make it in January. And you can see how many boxes that we carry up there. Of course, all of them are not from

We were surprised that some of the kids remember some of us. They seem to be sincerely glad on our visit. This year, school principle and students invited us to have a dinner with them. We didn't want to share some of their food as we know that this school has very limit budget on everything but it's very hard to say no. So, we had dinner with children in the old fashion way. Group of students invited each of us to their table and they asked lots of thing from each and everyone. I was surprised that they have to give a speech about our personal background after the dinner. In brief, we felt so good that we could be an inspiration to these minorities and we were very happy to be back here again.

This year we planned to have one day off at Umphang for travel. So, we decided to visit Ti-Lor-Su waterfall, which is the biggest and most beautiful waterfall in South East Asia. We can have a one-day trip to Ti-Lor-Sue from Umphang. The trip started in the morning with sightseeing by raft. Then, we take a road to the waterfall. Frankly, the road to waterfall is extremely bad. We cannot call it a road. Ti-Lor-Su is much bigger than I thought even though this is a drought season. I cannot imagine how big it is in the water season.

Then, we headed back to BKK on the next morning. After we got back to our normal life for a few weeks, we got some email from the students there. Below is one of the letter they wrote me. This is my first time to receive a happy valentine bless from kids. You can see how good manner they are. And...everything at Umphang want me to go back there again.
